The name Reiki derives from the Japanese pronunciation of two Japanese characters that describe the energy itself: "rei" (meaning 'unseen' or 'spiritual') and "ki" (Chinese "qi", here meaning 'energy' or 'life force').

Physiotherapy for the Shoulder
The shoulder, or more strictly the glenohumeral joint, is a major and important joint in the upper limb, responsible mostly for placing the hand in front of the body where the eyes can see it as it performs tasks. To allow this ability the shoulder has a very large range of movement, moderate strength and limited stability. This makes the shoulder a “soft tissue joint”, where the stability and satisfactory function depend on the function of the soft tissues, the ligaments, tendons and muscles. For physiotherapists the shoulder is an important joint, with much treatment and pre- and post-operative rehab required.
The humeral head and the glenoid of the scapula make up the glenohumeral joint, with the glenoid being small and flat and the humeral ball being large and partly spherical. The main ligaments and shoulder tendons insert on the humeral head, giving the movement and support the joint requires. The socket is made deeper by the glenoid labrum, a rim made of cartilage, which aids joint stability. Above the shoulder lies a joint between the outer end of the clavicle and the acromion, part of the scapula. This is a stability joint for arm movement and called the acromio-clavicular joint.
A great many muscles act on the shoulder joint and on the other joints in the shoulder girdle, the acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular and scapulothoracic joints. The glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints are acted upon by the major stabilisers and movers in the area, varying from power muscles which allow forceful work to stability muscles such as serratus anterior and the rotator cuff to smaller movement muscles such as deltoid. The muscles must keep the relationship between the shoulder blade and the thorax and ribcage steady and under control for the glenohumeral joint to also enjoy stability and precise movement.
The shoulder muscle tendons become flatter and thinner as they approach and then insert themselves onto the head of the humerus. By this way the rotator cuff, a group of four muscles including the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis, is able to exert its forces on the humeral head. The tendons coalesce as they surround and insert onto the ball of the humerus, forming a cuff around the ball, centering the ball on the socket to counter the tendency to slide upwards under muscle activity. Keeping the ball centred on the socket means the larger and more powerful muscles can perform functional shoulder and arm movements.
The rotator cuff degenerates with age, small tears appearing across its substance which can progress to massive tears, completely interfering with muscular function of the shoulder. Rotator cuff tears are often painful but it is not clear exactly why, as many older people have tears and do not have pain. Physiotherapists work to strengthen the rotator cuff or by exercising the main shoulder muscles without gravity resistance and gradually increasing the effort. Physios also work on rehabilitation after rotator cuff surgery for rotator cuff tears, following the detailed protocols for small, medium, large or massive rotator cuff tears.
Osteoarthritis (OA) more commonly affects the hips and the knees, however the shoulder can be severely affected in which cases physiotherapy can help with advice, mobilisation of the joints and work on strength and joint motion. Once physiotherapy treatment has been tried then total shoulder replacement is the only remaining treatment option, surgical replacement occurring of the head of the arm bone and the socket of the shoulder blade. As the shoulder is referred to as a “soft-tissue joint” it is the balance and strength of the tendons, muscles and ligaments that determines a good outcome for the replacement. Physiotherapists closely follow the surgical protocols to get the optimal results.
Physiotherapists treat many other types of shoulder problems such as impingement, tendinitis, hypermobility, abnormal muscle patterning, fractures and dislocations. Impingement is treated by strengthening the rotator cuff or by subacromial injection or acromioplasty operation, where the end of the acromion can be excised. Tendinitis is treated by direct treatment of the tendon and graded strengthening and hypermobility by stability work and accepting the limitations dictated by the condition. Abnormal muscle patterning is managed by teaching normal patterns functionally and fractures and dislocations by the protocols laid down by the surgeons and trauma physiotherapists.

Stretching made Easy and Enjoyable
We’ve heard it again and again: stretch before doing sports or before you go jogging. Ever since first year gym class, we have been taught that stretching before doing physically demanding work is key if we want to prevent getting serious injured. Never mind that all the top athletes do it - there is just not enough motivated for us to do it on a daily basis.
So why should we stretch? Stretching can, in fact, be advantageous in a number of ways. The first, and most obvious reason we should stretch is the old (yet valid) argument that we have been spoon-fed for so long - that stretching minimizes injury during any physical activity, and makes the tired muscles less painful the next day. But why is this? As we stretch, we send oxygenated blood to circulate through our body and brain, which helps rid our body of unwanted toxins and it enhances both our physical and mental performance. Our joints, tendons, and muscles tend to lose their elasticity with old age, so the more we stretch when we are young, the more fit and flexible you’ll be in the future.
Stretching is also good for relieving stress. Whenever you are pressured by physical or emotional stress, your muscles store unnecessary tensions, and by doing a few simple stretches you can disperse these tensions. For osteopaths, however, the most important reason for going stretches is to keep your back in shape. The back can only move in six directions, and therefore becomes stiff very quickly. And as the back is the foundation of our musculoskeletal system, making sure it stays healthy and flexible is of utmost importance.
It is best to stretch at least three times a week, preferably in the mornings after a hot shower has warmed up your muscles, or at the end of the day, when your muscles have been warmed naturally.
Despite what professionals say, it is not easy to maintain a stretching routine - for the simple reason that they are tedious. It is easy to set up a stretch routine, but following it is a different story. The best way to make yourself stick to a routine is by making the exercises fun. Instead of doing your stretches by yourself, for example, do them with a friend or relative - mundane things are much more interesting with company around. Or if there is a news or television program you watch regularly, do you stretches in front of the telly. This way, you get your stretches done and no one can call you a couch-potato.
You might have heard of the recent controversy - some experts are now arguing that static stretching (stretching while standing still) actually makes muscles weaker. As there is no concrete evidence to suggest that this is true, the best solution is to find the right balance. Do not hold stretch positions for too long, and try to incorporate as much movement into each stretch (i.e. swinging your arms or legs instead of holding them still). Also try to avoid having long stretch sessions - it is better to do shorter slots throughout the day.
We are often being bombarded with new tips and approaches of how to do things, but it is important to keep in mind that you should only do what works for you. If a stretch is not working for you, do something else! Regardless of whether you are a fitness guru or not, making sure you stretch regularly is vital for preventing problems in the future

Amazing Secrets Of Chakra Therapy
The chakras (the word literally means energy wheels) are lined up along the center line, or meridian, of a person’s body according to ancient Vedic thought.
Certain mystical practitioners even believe the number of these wheels to be fourteen.
These begin at the lowest base of the body (thought of as either the base of the spine or the genitals) and extending in their order to a person’s crown (tippy top of the head).
The base chakra is red. As we go up, the solar plexus has a golden chakra; the belly or womb chakra is orange in hue. The heart has a green chakra, the throat blue and the center of the forehead is indigo. This acts like the third eye. At the crown, the chakra is violet that turns whiter towards its circumference away from the head.
In addition to being associated with colors (wavelengths of light), the chakras are numbered in order one through seven, with the base chakra being number one.
Chakra one controls sexual health, physical strength and vitality
The second chakra is responsible for all of our creative powers.
Chakra three is responsible for our will power and desires.
The fourth chakra is responsible for our emotions and helps us to both give and receive love.
The fifth chakra is responsible for communicating and is the link between what we feel and what we think.
The sixth chakra is responsible for our intuition and extra sensory powers, which is why we call it the sixth sense.
The final chakra, number seven located at the crown of the head is what is responsible for our astral voyages.
When people feel they are connecting directly with God, they are focusing the energies of their seventh, purple-white, crown chakra.
The principle behind these chakras or wheels is that in a clean and healthy mind, these wheels will spin freely. And a spinning wheel will emit the most positive and strongest good energies for the person. However, if these wheels cannot spin due to some blockage, the person will experience sickness problems, both mentally and physically amid his or her chakras.
It is also important that each chakra is equal in its development to the others. If one of these is over-developed then an addiction, neuroses or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) may result.
There is constant worry that these chakras will become blocked. For instance, some people who possess a negative attitude towards sexual relations or have a poor diet will experience ill health or broken romantic relations primarily because they have disturbed the base red chakra.
The seventh chakra is prone to disruption in people who are forever thinking of negative actions towards others like working black magic. When this purple-white wheel is disturbed, the cosmic connection is hampered. Consequently the person feels bitter, fearful, and empty.
A healthy, rapid spinning chakra is extremely flexible and is able to open and shut when necessary. This gives it the ability to receive energy from a source which is good, but close when a negative force is attempting to transmit its own bad energy. If it is not healthy however it will be unable to prevent you from receiving this bad energy.
The way to use chakra therapy is to focus in a balanced way on each one of the seven major energy categories that each chakra commands. This should be done on a daily basis.
Take each major energy category and at some point each day meditate upon how its aspects are manifesting-or not manifesting-in your life, and as you do this visualize your body’s energy residing in that particular chakra. If you find your energy waning in any category, meditate on the steps you can take to make that category healthy and cleanse the related chakra.
Some people find that meditating on a gem stone the same color as the chakra wheel allows them to get a clear image in their mind of what actions they need to take to make it healthier.
Many people find that the simplest way is to listen to the frequencies of each chakra in turn which results in your own chakras resonating with these frequencies, which then results in them becoming completely balanced.

Chakra Sound Secrets Revealed!
The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit language, and means a vortex or spinning wheel. It is also used to refer to the seven chakras found in the human body, corresponding to the different glands of the body. The first chakra is found at the spinal base and the seventh at the crown. All chakras are centers of spinning energy.
As the chakra is a center of spinning energy and something that moves, it causes vibrations. These vibrations cause sound and this is the reason why there is vibration in different parts of the body through chakra sounds of varying frequencies.
There are not only seven independent chakra sounds for the seven chakras but also seven colors associated with the different chakras. These colors also vibrate at different frequencies where both the chakra sound and color helps in the restoration of balance in the chakras. This in turn helps in the restoring of health.
It is easy to turn to sound healing, with the help of chakra sounds. You only need your voice to feel better, calmer and clearer in a matter of minutes. These chakra sounds should be said softly and gently for not longer than five minutes.
1. You start with an UH sound, which is the deepest sound you can make. You have to do this with your eyes closed and attention focused on the base chakra, found at the spine base. You have to be aware of the sound resonance in the body; not from your throat, but from where the chakra is. You can complement visualization of this chakra sound with red color. This chakra sound has to be made for a minute or two but not more than five minutes.
2. The next chakra sound has to come from the second chakra found three inches below the naval. You have to chant OOO while complimenting the chakra sound with orange. You have to chant with eyes closed to experience the balancing of the chakra with other chakras for one or two minutes.
3. OH is the third chakra sound that has to come from the navel chakra located in the navel area. Yellow is the complimenting color and the chakra sound should start softly and gently, but with a higher tone than the last sound.
4. The chakra sound for the heart chakra, found in the middle of the chest is AH. This sound is usually emitted when in love and the heart chakra is associated with love. Green is the color you can use for complimenting this chakra sound where you have to start with a soft and gentle sound, with a slightly higher pitch than the last chakra sound.
5. The chakra sound for the throat chakra is EYE which has blue as its complimenting color. Like other chakra sounds, this chakra sound too has to be of a higher pitch than previous sounds
6. In between the forehead and slightly above the two eyes is the chakra sound belonging to the third eye. This chakra sound is AYE and is complimented with indigo color. This chakra sound starts with a soft and gentle tone which is however of a higher pitch than the previous sounds.
7. The crown chakra situated at the top of the head is where you chant the highest sound possible, EEE. This chakra sound is complemented with the color purple that starts with the highest sound you can make, EEE. Like other chakra sounds, this chakra sound also starts softly and gently.
You have to close your eyes when chanting all the chakra sounds while concentrating on different chakras. When you focus on the different chakras, you find chakra sounds projecting from the respective chakras. And with the resonance of the sound chakras, each chakra starts balancing and aligning with other chakras.
It is better if you relax or meditate after this exercise as you may feel light headed. This should be done so that you can realize the benefits of the chakra sounds better.

Breathing: The Essence of Yoga
Yoga has an extremely long history; over 6,000 years in fact! This ancient form of exercise is great for conditioning the body and the mind alike.
The practice of yoga is largely thought of as just the asanas (postures and exercises), but breath is really at the heart of yoga. Some have said “if you can breathe, then you can do yoga”. The use of breathing techniques to quiet your mind is one of the primary objectives of yoga.
By practicing yoga on a regular basis, you get to know your breath intimately. Not only will you learn about proper breathing , which will soothe and relax you, but you will bring your postures to life through the use of your breath.
Our minds tend to wander; thinking of the future and the past constantly. With yoga, you’ll train yourself to consider the present - where we are, where our bodies exist. The practice of yoga through breathing techniques helps you to draw your thoughts inward and release all of your worries and tensions.
Yoga can help to prevent stress and disease by letting you do this - letting go of these harmful, stressful thoughts, even for a short time, restores your body and mind to a healthy balanced state. Focusing on the present is what brings about this benefit.
Yoga teaches the practice of conscious breathing while doing poses - this fosters consciousness of your technique and greater mental alertness. By drawing your mind into the moment and forgetting all else, you will garner the benefits which yoga has to offer.
The following breathing exercise is a simple method of practicing yoga that will help you to let go of stress and balance your mind.
* Lie or sit comfortably and become aware of your normal state of breathing.
* Be aware of your breath while you inhale and exhale, counting to four each time. Do this several times.
* Next, make your inhalations and exhalations last for five counts each.
* After several rounds of breathing in and out for five counts, increase to six counts. Be conscious of your body at all times and don’t tense up.
* Continue increasing the count of your breathing until you get to nine. If you start to feel stressed, drop back down to a number that is more comfortable.
* Keep bringing your mind back to your body to check to see if there is any tension anywhere in your body. If so, attempt to relax that part of your body.
* Whatever your final number of breaths is, continue breathing with long breaths for several rounds, then drop the counting and breathe naturally for 10 rounds.
What you should learn from this and any other yoga breathing exercise is to still your thoughts and relax your mind so that you are conscious of your body. Over time, you will gain control of your breathing and you will be able to draw on its power to calm yourself during stressful moments.

Origins Of Yoga
Staying fit and in good health has become a big emphasis in today’s society. Many forms of exercise have evolved in one way or another to fit the needs of those seeking to stay fit.
Not many people realize that yoga has many similar movements as ballet. Many people will begin practicing yoga for the flexibility advantages that it offers. Even though there are things that yoga has in common with other exercises, there are numerous other benefits to studying it. Its popularity has increased over the years in western society and is now considered the fashionable way to get into shape. It might seem like a new form of exercise, but it has actually been around for centuries originating from Eastern cultures with spiritual roots.
Due to Western culture modernizing yoga, much of the spiritual side of it is forgotten, and is viewed upon as simply a new form of exercising. In the beginning yoga was a spiritual practice, but the movements have remained the same. In the past, yoga was considered as a small piece of the puzzle, but today yoga is viewed the entire puzzle. The true meaning and purpose of yoga has been forgotten.
The origin of yoga can’t be traced exactly, but there is evidence of it beginning roughly around the same time when the seals of the Indus Valley civilization were discovered. Figures are depicted in the lotus position at around 300 BCE. The vedas were being written at about this same time which are the source of modern day yoga exercises. The culture of the Vedas created the ancient Indian obsession with yoga rituals and sacrifice. The importance of sacrifice is demonstrated in the yogic corpse asana.
It involves lying as if placed in a coffin, signifying death, the greatest of sacrifices. This is deeply meaningful, even though it might seem morbid today. The corpse pose meant that one understood that according to the Veda’s teachings, death leads to freedom.
The meaning of the word yoga can be translated as “union”, the joining of the spiritual and physical worlds. Versus 4:4, 13-14 of the Vedanta Sutras state that material possessions are not attractive to a free soul. The idea of this is to be able to liberate ourselves from material objects that only have meaning in this life.
In modern day yoga self-sacrifice is also possible. Through practice of stillness and asanas, our outlook can be changed. It will feel as though we are a part of the whole and we will discover that giving is the same as helping ourselves since we are all one.
Yoga, in the ancient days, was seen as a small part of a whole. Centuries ago, yoga focused on breath work and postures amid the betterment of the mind, body and spirit. But today, yoga concentrates more on postures and less on breathing. Yoga’s postures and concentration on breathing do offer tremendous advantages. The medical benefits of yoga include increase in flexibility and energy, reduces stress, improves muscle strength and tone, reduces depression, and improves balance and coordination.

Tai Chi For Health
Tai chi is an exercise program really different from the others because it provides all the benefits when compared to the other exercise programs. The other programs provide stimulation only to the musculoskeletal system. When you are performing Isometric workouts you apply your force against an immovable object hence using only a set of muscles in the body.
Calisthenics or weightlifting also emphasize only on the individual muscles although they provide a wide range of motion to the muscles unlike Isometric exercises. All these exercises do not improve your overall physique. Only Tai chi helps building your physique totally.
The advantages of Tai chi are innumerable according to the Medical Academy of Shanghai. Studies conducted by them show that Tai Chi regulates the blood pressure, reduces stress and tones the musculosketal system in the body. The blood circulation in the body is smooth. The central nervous system is stimulated and it eliminates all the gastric problems if present.
Tai Chi is a form of Meditation that helps us understand our real ego and boost our self control. It helps us deal with the people around us more effectively. Tai Chi depends on natural movements derived from our innate strength, the exercise depends on breathing and repetitive movements to defend and gain more control about ourselves.
Tai chi practice helps to focus the mind, to stay healthy, to boost balance and to avoid inflexible thinking. Tai chi can be practiced by everybody at any age, it is an exercise for life long well being easily done anywhere at anytime. Harmony and balance bring good health and well being.
